Chapter 2: The Message No Sister Should Receive
Travis was still shouting as they pushed him into the back of the patrol car.
"You'll regret this, Emily.
You have no idea who you're dealing with."
I didn't answer.
I was already on the phone, following the unit to my sister's house.
Her name is Rachel.
When they opened the bedroom door, she was sitting on the floor with her back against the wall.
Her lip was split.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked up at me and the first thing she said was, "Is Mason okay?"
Not "help me." Not "I'm hurt."
"Is Mason okay?"
I had to look away so she wouldn't see my face.
We got her to the hospital.
The doctor came out after twenty minutes and asked me quietly how long this had been going on.
I said I didn't know.
He nodded slowly.
"Based on what we're seeing…
this wasn't the first time."
I stood in that hallway and couldn't move.
Then my phone buzzed.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
*"Travis told me you'd get involved eventually.
There's something about your sister you don't know.
Something she's been hiding from you.
If you want the truth, meet me tomorrow.
Come alone."*
I stared at the screen.
Rachel had been hiding something?
