Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

“Mrs.
Emerson’s letter concerns an additional charge of twenty-two thousand dollars submitted yesterday under her name,” the manager said.
I stopped beside the doors, my hand tightening around Harold’s ledger.
Jacob looked up.
“What additional charge?”
Amanda snatched for the microphone.
“This is private.
Keep reading and you’ll ruin my wedding.”
“Our wedding,” Jacob corrected.
The manager held the letter away from her.
“The request covered a honeymoon upgrade and a private cash transfer.
Mrs.
Emerson states that she never approved either one.”
A murmur swept through the hall.
Amanda turned toward me.
“Judith, how could you embarrass us like this after everything we’ve done for you?”
“Everything you’ve done for me?” I asked.
“Name one thing.”
Jacob’s face had gone pale.
“Amanda, you told me your father paid for the honeymoon.”
“He was going to repay her.”
“I never spoke to your father,” I said.
The manager removed another page from the envelope.
“There is also a signature on the request, but it does not match Mrs.
Emerson’s signature on the original contracts.”
“That proves nothing,” Amanda snapped.
Then the wedding coordinator stood at the back of the room, clutching her phone.
“I have the email Amanda sent with that form,” she said.
“And Jacob, there’s one sentence you need to see.”
Amanda rushed toward her, but the coordinator turned the screen toward Jacob.
His lips parted as he read the first line—
