Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Not Supposed to Be There

The diner stayed frozen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then a woman two booths over whispered to her husband, loud enough for the whole room to hear: "Who *is* she?"
The man on the floor was still groaning, one hand pressed to his jaw.
A younger guy — his friend — crouched down beside him and looked up at the mother with something between fear and fury.
"Lady, do you have any idea what you just did?
Do you know who he is?"
She didn't answer.
She kept her eyes on her son, smoothing his hair back with one steady hand.
The diner manager rushed over, phone already raised.
"I'm calling the police."
"Good," she said quietly.
"Do that."
Something in her voice made him stop.
She didn't sound afraid.
She didn't sound angry.
She sounded like someone who had been through far worse — and come out the other side.
Her son tugged her sleeve.
"Mama…
are we in trouble?"
She looked down at him and almost smiled.
"No, baby.
We're not."
That's when the door opened.
A man in a dark jacket stepped inside.
He scanned the room once, saw her kneeling on the floor, and went completely still.
He knew her.
And from the look on his face — he was not supposed to find her here.
😶
---
What that man knew about her — and why he was terrified — is the part nobody expected.
