Chapter 2: The Envelope She Was Never Meant to See

Part 2 👇
I did not sl@p her.
I reached past her and picked up my gold scarf from where it had fallen against the sideboard when the table shook.
I folded it slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Laid it over my arm like it was Sunday morning and I had all the time in the world.
Then I looked Brittany dead in the eye and said, "I know what's in that envelope."
The color left her face so fast it was like watching a light switch off.
Marcus said, "Mama, what envelope?"
I kept my eyes on Brittany.
"The one from Hargrove and Associates.
The one with the navy-and-gold seal.
The one she didn't want me to open tonight."
Brittany's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Corinne stood up slowly from her chair.
"Dorothy.
Baby.
How long have you known?"
"Long enough," I said.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Somebody tell me what is going on right now."
Brittany finally found her voice.
It came out thin and sharp.
"It's nothing.
It's a legal matter.
It doesn't concern her."
"It has my name on it," I said.
"My house.
My husband's name."
The room went so quiet I could hear the grandbaby breathing in the corner.
Marcus turned to his wife, and the look on his face was something I had never seen from my son before.
Then Brittany reached for her clutch — and the envelope was gone.
Someone else had it now.
And when I turned to see who, my knees nearly gave way.

What Dorothy found out next will break your heart — and change everything you thought you knew about that night.
