Chapter 2: What Was in the Folder

David's hands were shaking.
"This is a mistake," he said.
"Whatever this is, it's a mistake.
I want my lawyer."
"Mr.
Vance." The man in the dark suit didn't raise his voice.
"Your attorney has already been notified.
He declined to represent you."
The room went completely still.
Julianne took another step back toward the door.
One of the troopers moved quietly to block it.
"What did she tell you?" David's voice cracked.
"Whatever Maya said — she's unstable.
She's been unstable for years.
Ask anyone."
The man opened the leather folder and placed a single photograph on the bare floor between them.
David looked down.
Whatever he saw made him stop breathing.
"Where did you get that," he whispered.
Not a question.
A confession.
Outside, I sat in my neighbor's car with my hands folded in my lap.
I wasn't watching anymore.
I already knew what was in that folder.
I had put it together myself, page by page, in the fourteen nights after I buried our daughter alone in the rain.
David thought the worst thing I could do was leave him.
He never once considered what I had found.
