Chapter 6: The Offer Daniel Didn't Expect

Ethan called Daniel Reed's office at ten-fifteen that same morning and asked for a meeting.
Daniel's assistant called back within the hour.
"Mr.
Reed can see you Thursday at two."
"Tell him I'll be there at noon today," Ethan said.
"And tell him to have his attorney present."
A pause.
"I'm not sure Mr.
Reed is available at—"
"He'll make time.
Tell him I have the Vela Advisory documentation and James Whitfield's access logs.
He'll understand."
Forty minutes later, Daniel Reed's assistant called back.
"Mr.
Reed can see you at noon."
The Reed Group occupied the top two floors of a building twelve minutes from Carter House.
The lobby was the kind of lobby that was designed to make visitors feel smaller — high ceilings, dark marble, a reception desk positioned so that you had to walk toward it rather than it coming to you.
Ethan walked in at noon exactly.
Daniel Reed met him in a glass-walled conference room on the upper floor.
He was a broad-shouldered man in his mid-fifties with the specific kind of composure that came from decades of controlled negotiation.
His attorney — a woman named Calloway — sat to his right with a notepad already open.
Daniel gestured to the chair across from him.
"Ethan.
I appreciate you coming directly."
"I won't take much of your time." Ethan set a slim folder on the table but did not open it.
"Your team has been using confidential Carter House records to structure a takeover bid.
Those records were obtained through a coordinated arrangement involving your former assistant, James Whitfield, and my CFO.
The access chain is fully documented."
Daniel's expression did not shift.
"That's a serious allegation."
"It's a documented fact.
The routing logs, payment records, and credential history are all in here." Ethan placed one hand on the folder.
"Your attorney can review them now if she'd like."
Calloway looked at Daniel.
He gave a small nod.
She opened the folder.
The room was quiet while she read.
Daniel kept his eyes on Ethan.
"What is it you want?" Daniel said.
"I want to know how far Vanessa is involved."
Something shifted in Daniel's face.
It was small — a slight tightening around the eyes — but Ethan saw it.
"My wife has no part in this."
"She was messaging Marcus Hale at nine-fifteen last night.
From her personal phone.
At the same restaurant where your former business associate's takeover attempt was apparently a topic of active coordination."
"She was having dinner with colleagues."
"I know exactly where she was having dinner," Ethan said.
"I was in the same room."
Daniel was still for a moment.
Then he sat back.
"What do you want, Ethan?"
"I want three things.
First, the takeover bid is withdrawn — formally, in writing, by close of business Friday.
Second, every document, copy, derivative file, or analysis produced using Carter House records is destroyed under supervised conditions and confirmed by your attorney." Ethan nodded toward Calloway.
"Third, Whitfield is cut off.
Whatever arrangement you have with him, it ends.
I'll know if it doesn't."
"And in exchange?"
"I don't file a civil suit for trade secret misappropriation.
I don't report the credential fraud to the authorities.
And I don't share what I know about Vela Advisory Group with the three institutional partners currently evaluating Reed Group's upcoming bond offering."
The bond offering.
Daniel's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
"You have twenty-four hours," Ethan said.
He stood and picked up the folder.
"Tell your attorney to call Patricia Osei at Carter House when you're ready to confirm."
He left the folder on the table.
He walked to the door, then stopped.
"One more thing," he said, without turning around.
"Whatever Whitfield told you about the Carter Family trust — that path is closed.
It was closed the moment you asked him to find it.
I'd encourage you not to test that."
He walked out.
In the elevator going down, he checked his phone.
A message from Raymond: *Whitfield's attorney just called our main line.
Asking for a meeting.*
Ethan typed back: *Tell him Wednesday morning.
My office.
And pull everything we have on him before then.*
May you like
The elevator doors opened to the lobby.
He walked through it without slowing down.
