Chapter 2: This Wasn't the First

Part 2 ⬇️

The letter was from the university.

But it wasn't the scholarship offer.

It was a withdrawal notice — stamped three weeks earlier.

Someone had contacted the admissions office and told them the girl was no longer interested.

That she had "chosen a different path."

The father's hands were shaking.

"You called them," he said.

His voice was low.

Quiet.

Worse than shouting.

The stepmother crossed her arms.

"I was protecting this family.

She was going to leave and never come back."

"She earned that scholarship."

"She's seventeen.

She doesn't know what she wants."

The girl hadn't said a word.

She was staring at the withdrawal notice with her name printed at the top.

Three weeks.

It had been sitting in that drawer for three weeks while she picked up extra shifts and told herself she just hadn't heard back yet.

Then the father's phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen and went completely still.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Four words.

*This wasn't the first.*

What did that message mean — and what else had the stepmother been hiding all this time?
