Chapter 2: The Name on the Envelope

The attorney called me back forty minutes later.
His voice was different.
Quieter.
The kind of quiet that meant something had gone wrong in a room he hadn't expected to go wrong in.
"Mrs.
Blackwood…
Mr.
Blackwood has reviewed the document."
"And?"
A long pause.
"He's asked me to tell you that the report must be fabricated."
I set down my coffee cup very carefully.
"He said that?"
"He did."
"While Vanessa was sitting beside him?"
"…Yes."
I almost felt sorry for the attorney.
He was a smart man caught between a powerful liar and a woman holding three laboratory results from three separate clinics.
"Tell him I have the original clinic records, the physician's contact information, and the signed chain-of-custody documentation."
Silence.
"Tell him I also have something else."
"What would that be, Mrs.
Blackwood?"
I looked at the second envelope on my kitchen counter.
The one I hadn't mentioned to anyone yet.
The one that had arrived by courier two days before Vanessa appeared on my sofa.
"Tell him I know who the baby's father actually is."
The attorney stopped breathing.
So did I, for just a moment.
Because the name on that courier envelope wasn't a stranger's.
It was someone Ethan trusted with his life.
---
What Claire found inside that envelope destroyed everything Ethan thought he knew.
