Chapter 2: Four Words She Never Expected

The sedan pulled away from the curb before anyone inside the gala even noticed Mara was gone.

She didn't look back.

On the other end of the call, a man's voice answered immediately — like he had been waiting.

"Everything's in position," he said.

"The accounts.

The documents.

All of it."

Mara exhaled slowly.

"And Julian?"

"He won't see it coming until Monday morning.

By then it's too late to stop it."

She looked out the window at the lights of the city passing by.

"Good.

Make sure Beatrice gets her copy.

I want her to read every page."

There was a pause on the line.

"Mara…

are you sure?

Once we move, there's no pulling back."

She didn't hesitate.

"I've been planning this for three years.

Tonight just moved the timeline up."

The call ended.

She opened a second message on her phone — one that had been sitting unread since before the gala began.

Four words from a name she hadn't spoken aloud in years.

*He knows you're back.*

Mara stared at those words for a long moment.

Then she typed one word in reply.

*Good.*
