Chapter 2: The Photograph in the Envelope

Grace’s knees nearly gave way.
Victoria stepped back.
“You knew?”
“I knew Grace was using the maid’s position to search for something,” Ethan said.
“But I didn’t know what—until this morning.”
Grace’s voice shook.
“You read my letter?”
“Yes.”
Victoria turned toward security.
“Remove her!
She entered your home under false pretenses.”
“No one is leaving,” Ethan replied.
Grace slowly faced the guests.
“My mother worked for the Ashford family for eighteen years.
Six months ago, she discovered payments connected to those shell companies.”
Victoria’s father shouted, “That woman was dismissed for st*aling!”
“She never st*le anything!” Grace cried.
“You ruined her name because she refused to stay silent.”
Ethan lifted the black flash drive.
“My forensic team uncovered the missing money.
Grace came here searching for the evidence that could clear her mother.”
Victoria’s confidence returned for a moment.
“There is no evidence.”
Grace reached into her apron and removed a sealed envelope.
Victoria’s face went white.
“I found this behind the locked panel in your private study,” Grace said.
“You opened my safe?” Victoria whispered.
“No.
Your father did.”
Every head turned toward him.
Then Ethan broke the seal, pulled out a photograph, and stared at it.
“Grace,” he said quietly, “your mother wasn’t the only person they betrayed.”
Victoria lunged for the photograph—but Ethan raised it where the entire ballroom could see.
