Chapter 2: The Brother They Buried

I typed back one word: "Yes."
I watched the truck door swing open.
Then I turned back to Madison and smiled — the first real smile I'd worn all day.
"You want me gone?" I said.
"Fine.
But before I go, everyone in this room is going to know exactly who you are."
Madison's face went cold.
"Don't you dare—"
"Dad's offshore accounts," I said, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear.
"The ones Marcus found five years ago.
The ones your wedding is being paid for with."
The room shifted.
Chairs scraped.
Heads turned.
Our mother grabbed my arm so hard her nails dug in.
"Stop talking," she hissed.
"Right now."
"Let go of me."
She didn't.
That's when the glass doors opened.
Marcus walked in wearing a plain grey jacket, calm as a Sunday morning.
He was bigger than I remembered.
The room parted for him without knowing why.
Madison went completely still.
Our mother's grip on my arm loosened.
Marcus didn't look at either of them.
He looked only at me.
"You okay?" he said.
Before I could answer, a woman at the far table stood up — someone I didn't recognize.
She was holding her phone with both hands, and her face had gone white.
"Marcus," she said.
"They told me you signed the papers."
He turned slowly.
His jaw tightened.
"What papers?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
