Chapter 2: The Envelope With Her Mother's Handwriting

She walked straight to her room and closed the door without a sound.
No slamming.
No crying.
Nothing.
Her stepmother laughed from the dining room.
"See?
She knows her place."
But her father said nothing.
He just stared at his plate.
She moved quickly.
Pulled a small box from under the floorboard beneath her bed.
Inside was a folded document, a USB drive, and a photograph she had kept hidden for three years.
Her hands were steady.
The cut on her forehead was still fresh, but she didn't even touch it.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*"It's time.
The lawyer is ready.
Don't leave without the envelope in the kitchen drawer."*
She stopped.
She walked back out to the hallway, calm as ever, and opened that drawer.
The envelope was there.
Her name was written on the front — but not in her handwriting.
In her late mother's.
She pressed it against her chest and walked out the front door without looking back.
Her stepmother called after her.
"Good riddance!"
She didn't turn around.
Because she already knew what was inside that envelope — and it was going to change everything for that family.
Just not in the way they expected.
---
What was in that envelope — and what did her mother leave behind?
