Chapter 2: The Photograph Between Them

Part 2 ⬇️
The room had gone so quiet that Claire could hear her own heartbeat.
Elias Archer did not answer her question.
He turned to Nathan instead.
"Clear the room," he said.
"Grandfather—"
"Now, Nathan."
Nathan hesitated for only a second.
Then he raised his voice and asked the guests to move to the east terrace.
Two hundred people obeyed a man in his eighties without argument.
That alone told Claire something.
Vivienne did not move.
"Whatever this is, I'm staying."
"You," Elias said, without looking at her, "are the reason this happened tonight."
Vivienne's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
When the last guest filtered through the doors, Elias walked slowly toward Claire.
He stopped close enough that she could see the grief in his eyes.
Not anger.
Grief.
"Silas Bennett was my closest friend," he said quietly.
"And I let him walk away believing a lie I never corrected."
Claire felt the floor shift beneath her.
"What lie?"
Elias reached into his jacket and drew out a photograph.
Old.
Worn at the edges.
He held it out.
Claire looked down.
Her grandfather stood beside a younger Elias.
Between them was a woman Claire had never seen — but whose face was unmistakably her own.
"Who is she?" Claire whispered.
Elias's voice broke.
"She was supposed to be Nathan's mother."
