Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to See

Victor didn't move toward Dominic.

He moved toward Marcus.

One slow step.

Then another.

I pulled my son behind me.

"Don't."

Victor stopped.

His expression reset into something smooth and controlled, like a mask sliding back into place.

"Elena." His voice was almost gentle.

"You don't understand what you've walked into tonight."

"I understand enough."

Dominic was still holding the device.

His jaw was tight.

His eyes hadn't left Victor's face.

"Nine years," Dominic said quietly.

"You ran this house for nine years."

Victor turned to him.

"Sir, whatever you think that is—"

"I think it blocked every sound from reaching my eardrum." Dominic's voice didn't rise.

That made it worse.

"I think someone placed it there while I was unconscious in that hospital.

And I think you were the only person who had access."

Victor's composure cracked — just for a second.

"You can't prove anything."

"Not yet."

One of the guards stepped forward and reached for Victor's jacket pocket.

A phone.

Unlocked.

A message thread still open on the screen.

The guard read it once.

Then looked up at Dominic.

His face said everything.

Victor lunged for the door.

He didn't make it.

Marcus pressed his face into my shoulder.

"Mommy," he whispered.

"Is the bug man going to come back?"

I held him tighter and didn't answer.

Because I had just seen the name at the top of that message thread.

And it wasn't a stranger.

What Elena saw on that phone changes everything.
