Chapter 2: The Open Phone

"There was one maid," Claire said quietly.
"Rosa.
She used to leave extra bread.
Slip notes under the door."
"What happened to her?"
Claire looked at her hands.
"She stopped coming.
I heard Vivian tell Grant she'd been let go.
But Rosa would never have left without saying goodbye."
Ethan went very still.
Before he could speak, the floorboard outside the door creaked.
Both of them froze.
Then Vivian's voice came through the gap — low, controlled, and completely calm.
"Mr.
Hale.
I see you've found our little problem."
Ethan opened the door.
Vivian Ashford stood in the hallway in a silk robe, holding a phone.
She didn't look frightened.
She looked like a woman who had handled worse.
"She's mentally unwell," Vivian said.
"She's been cared for here her entire life.
Whatever she's told you—"
"She told me about the trust," Ethan said.
Vivian's expression didn't change.
But her thumb moved across the phone screen.
Someone was being called.
Or warned.
"You should come downstairs, Mr.
Hale.
We can explain everything over coffee."
Claire gripped the doorframe behind him.
"She's done this before," Claire whispered.
"Every time someone got close — they disappeared."
Vivian smiled.
"You're upsetting her.
That's not good for anyone."
Ethan looked at the phone in Vivian's hand.
The screen was still lit.
The call was still open.
Someone on the other end was already listening.
