Chapter 2: The Woman in the Pale Blue Dress

Part 2 ⬇️

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

While they worked on Sophie, a hotel security officer pulled me aside.

He was calm.

Too calm for what he was about to say.

"Ma'am, our system automatically backs up footage to a secure server.

We've already reviewed the relevant timestamps."

He turned his tablet toward me.

The angle was clear.

Unmistakable.

Preston approaching Sophie's jacket.

His hand going in.

The phone going down.

But there was a second figure.

Standing just behind him.

Partially blocked by the floral centerpiece.

Watching the jacket.

Nodding once.

My stomach dropped.

I knew that dress.

Pale blue.

Small pearl buttons down the front.

I had complimented it that morning.

"Do you recognize this person?" the officer asked quietly.

I couldn't speak.

Because the woman on that screen — the one who had spent the entire evening standing beside me, squeezing my hand, whispering that everything would be fine — was my own mother.

She hadn't been comforting me.

She had been watching to make sure the plan worked.

Behind me, I heard Preston's voice rise sharply.

"You have no right to detain me.

Do you know who my father is?"

And then a sound I will never forget.

Sophie's small voice from the stretcher.

May you like

"Mommy…

why did Grandma do it?"
