Chapter 2: The Bridesmaid Who Couldn't Look at Me

Nobody moved.

Gareth's new wife, standing two steps behind him, wouldn't meet my eyes.

She'd been smiling all evening.

She wasn't smiling now.

"You need to leave," Gareth said.

Low.

Controlled.

"You're embarrassing yourself."

"I'm not going anywhere," I said.

"Not until someone explains how that phone got into my daughter's pocket."

My father finally stood.

I thought — for one second — he was going to defend Nora.

Instead he walked to my side and spoke quietly into my ear.

"Don't do this here.

You'll regret it."

I looked at Nora.

Eight years old.

Bl00d drying at her temple.

Still clutching my sleeve.

Still waiting for someone in this family to choose her.

That was when I noticed the bridesmaid — Gareth's wife's younger sister — standing near the far wall.

She hadn't moved since the phone was pulled from Nora's pocket.

Her face was white.

Her hands were shaking.

She knew something.

I started walking toward her.

Gareth stepped directly into my path.

"Don't."

One word.

The same way he'd said it to Nora when she'd tried to show him her flower girl drawing that morning.

Flat.

Final.

Like she was nothing.

"The cameras were running all night, Gareth," I said.

His jaw tightened.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.
