Chapter 2: The Name No One Was Supposed to Hear

"You are my daughter."

The words landed like a stone dropped into still water.

The girl stopped breathing.

The man pulled back just far enough to look at her face — really look — and what she saw in his eyes wasn't pity.

It was grief.

Twenty years of it.

"That's not possible," she whispered.

"The mark." His voice broke.

"I put that mark on your wrist myself.

The night they took you from me."

The blonde woman across the room made a sound — half laugh, half something else entirely.

"Victor, stop." Her voice was sharp now, the triumph completely gone.

"You're making a scene."

The man — Victor — slowly turned his head toward her.

The look on his face made two guests step backward.

"You knew," he said quietly.

"Didn't you."

It wasn't a question.

The blonde woman's jaw tightened.

Her fingers curled around the gold scissors still in her hand.

"You're confused," she said.

"You've been drinking."

"I have been sober for nineteen years." Victor's voice was steel.

"And I have been looking for her for just as long."

He turned back to the girl.

His gloved hand reached into his jacket and produced a small photograph — old, creased, worn at the edges.

A baby.

A tiny wrist.

The same mark.

The girl's knees buckled.

Someone in the crowd whispered a name.

A name the blonde woman clearly recognized — because the color drained from her face completely.

What that name revealed next tore the entire room apart.
