I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
That one word — spoken by a four-year-old who had no reason to lie — hung in the air between all of us like a verdict.
Grace slowly raised her eyes to mine.
They were wet, exhausted, and full of something I hadn't expected.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Grief.
"Nathan," she whispered.
"I tried to tell you.
Two years ago.
I sent letters.
I called the office.
I —"
"She's lying." Victoria's voice cut across the kitchen like a blade.
"Nathan, look at me.
This woman is a desperate, unstable employee who has been obsessed with you for years.
She planned this.
She brought that child here to manipulate you —"
"Her eyes," I said quietly.
Victoria stopped.
I crouched down slowly until I was level with Lily.
She hadn't looked away from me once.
And the longer I looked at her, the harder it became to breathe.
She had my mother's eyes.
The exact same shape.
The exact same dark amber ring around the edge of the iris that every Hargrove had carried for three generations.
My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket.
I pulled it out without thinking.
Unknown number.
A text.
Four words.
*Check the safe, Nathan.*
I looked up at Victoria.
Her face had gone completely still.
The truth Nathan finds in that safe will change everything — and Victoria's next move is one nobody sees coming.
