Chapter 1: The Wall That Should Not Have Been There
The hidden wall slammed shut just as I stepped into the hallway.
Then I heard my son crying behind it.
"Perrin?"
Silence.
Then a tiny, broken voice.
"Dad…"
My travel bag dropped to the floor.
I ran toward the sound and ripped at the wooden panel until the concealed door tore free from its track.
Perrin was curled inside the narrow room in filthy shorts, clutching empty air where his stuffed dog should have been.
"Dad…
is it really you?"
I lifted him against my chest.
His whole body shook.
Then he pointed over my shoulder.
Rhea stood at the end of the corridor.
My fiancée.
The woman who had been living in my home while I traveled for work.
I shoved her away from us.
She crashed backward into the dessert table, sending cake and crystal across the floor.
"Touch me again, and I'll destroy you."
Before I could answer, Perrin grabbed my sleeve.
His face was wet with tears.
"Dad…"
I looked down.
"What?"
He whispered the sentence that made every part of my life stop making sense.
"Mom never d*ed."
Rhea went completely white.
Perrin tightened his arms around my neck.
"She h*d her."
