Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Lies

Luca stopped so suddenly that his shoes slid on the tile.

“Take your hand off my daughter.”

Vanessa pulled Emily backward.

The basement stairs were three feet behind them.

“Put the recorder and ledger in the fireplace.”

Emily’s face had gone pale, but her voice remained steady.

“You spent weeks telling me my father didn’t want me.”

“Be quiet.”

“You needed me ashamed and alone.”

“I said be quiet.”

Claire edged toward the pantry while Reid shifted closer to the wall.

Vanessa saw us both.

“Nobody moves.”

Luca placed the recorder on the table.

“You want evidence?

Take it and go.”

Mrs.

Russo shook her head.

“Luca—”

“My daughter comes first.”

Vanessa smiled.

“At last, you understand how this works.”

She pointed toward the back door.

“Reid, move away.

Claire, bring me the ledger.”

I picked it up.

My hands shook as I approached her.

“Closer.”

Emily looked directly at me.

“Claire, don’t give it to her.”

Vanessa tightened her arm.

“Your mother loses her home if you refuse.”

I stopped two steps away.

“My mother taught me that a house can be rebuilt.”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“But once you help someone hurt an innocent woman, you have to live inside that choice forever.”

I threw the ledger toward Luca instead.

Vanessa reached for it.

Emily stamped hard on Vanessa’s foot and dropped to her knees.

Reid crossed the room in two strides.

He pulled Emily away while the officers restrained Vanessa.

The brass key clattered across the floor.

Emily crawled into Luca’s arms.

“I’ve got you,” he said.

“I’ve got both of you.”

Michael knelt beside them.

“The baby?”

Emily pressed a hand to her stomach.

A moment later, she released a broken laugh.

“She kicked.”

Luca began to cry against his daughter’s hair.

Vanessa stood between the officers, breathing hard.

“You think this proves anything?

Elena’s recording is hearsay.

Dominic will say Luca ordered every transfer.”

Dominic looked at her from across the kitchen.

“No, I won’t.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re my brother.”

“You told me the accounts were legal.

You put my name on every company and kept the money.”

“You signed the papers.”

“Because you promised Luca would protect us.”

Luca looked at him.

“I never knew.”

Dominic faced the officer.

“There’s a second ledger in Vanessa’s apartment.

Behind the mirror in her dressing room.

It has every payment.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You weak little fool.”

Dominic’s mouth trembled.

“You were going to blame me.”

Grace Russo arrived twenty minutes later with two investigators.

She spread Elena’s documents across the kitchen table.

“This deposit slip links the missing charity funds to Bellini Property Group,” she said.

“And the company that purchased Claire’s mother’s lien is one of the recipients.”

Vanessa raised her chin.

“You still need proof I controlled it.”

I remembered the breakfast conversations and pulled out my phone.

“She used to dictate instructions while I cleaned the study.”

Vanessa laughed.

“And?”

“My phone records voice notes automatically when I make supply lists.”

I opened a file from three weeks earlier.

Vanessa’s voice came through clearly:

“Dominic, move the Dawson lien into Bellini Property Group.

Claire will do whatever I ask once her mother’s house is at risk.”

Grace looked at Vanessa.

“That gives me coercion, conspiracy, attempted evidence destruction, and financial fraud.”

Vanessa turned to Luca.

“Tell them this is a family misunderstanding.

Do it, and I’ll tell the press you were another victim.”

Luca removed the engagement ring from his pocket and placed it beside the ledger.

“I was a fool.

That does not make you family.”

Grace nodded to the officers.

They led Vanessa toward the door.

She stopped beside Emily and looked at her one last time.

“Your mother lost because she trusted people.”

Emily picked up the brass key.

“No.

My mother won because she left the truth where love could find it.”

Vanessa’s face emptied.

As the door closed behind her, Grace’s phone rang.

She listened, then looked at Luca.

“My team searched Vanessa’s apartment.”

“Did they find the second ledger?”

“Yes.

But they found something else too—a signed policy worth five million dollars.”

Emily stood.

“Whose life was insured?”
