Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Gold

Part 2 ⬇️
She was standing at my door at eight in the morning still wearing the silver dress.
The red lipstick was gone.
The bruise at her wrist was darker in daylight.
*Please,* she said.
*I need to explain.*
I should have closed the door.
I didn't.
Her name was Lena.
She was twenty-three.
And she hadn't come to Alessandro's table as his mistress.
She had come because he told her he would hurt her brother if she refused.
*He needed everyone to see you walk out,* she said, her voice barely holding together.
*He needed you gone from that house before midnight.*
I went very still.
*Why midnight?*
She looked at the ring — still on her finger because she hadn't dared take it off.
*Because of what's inside it.*
My father had made that ring.
I had worn it for two years.
I knew every curve of it.
*There's nothing inside it,* I said.
Lena shook her head slowly.
*Your father hid something in the setting before he d\*ed.
Alessandro found out three days ago.
That's why he needed it off your hand — and away from you — before the Romano lawyers arrived this morning.*
I looked at the ring.
She held it out to me.
And that was when we both heard the car pull up outside.
---
What Alessandro hid in that ring — and who just arrived — will change everything.
