Chapter 2: What Evie Kept Hidden

Part 2 ⬇️

Adrian's hands were shaking.

That was the first thing I noticed.

This man who never flinched.

Who ran half of Chicago without raising his voice.

His hands were shaking over a photograph.

"Where did she get this?" he said quietly.

Vivian took one step forward.

Then stopped.

"Adrian, whatever that woman wrote, she's bitter.

She knew her time here was ending and she—"

"This is my mother."

The ballroom went completely silent.

"This is my mother," he repeated.

"Standing next to your father."

Vivian's chin lifted.

"They moved in the same circles.

That means nothing."

"They're at a private dinner.

In 1987." His voice dropped lower.

"Evie has written a date on the back.

And an address."

"Adrian—"

"She was twenty-two years old here." He turned the photograph over.

Read something.

Then looked up slowly.

"Is that why your family pushed so hard for this engagement?"

Vivian said nothing.

That silence was louder than anything she could have said.

Then Adrian reached into the envelope and removed the third photograph.

His face went completely still.

"Who is the child in this picture, Vivian?"

She finally looked away.

And I realized — this wasn't just about Miss Evie.

This was about something that had been buried for decades.

What Adrian discovered in that third photograph exposed a secret that changed everything.
