Chapter 2: What Was Already in Transit

Luca didn't move for a long moment.

He just looked at me.

"Tell me exactly what she said, Olivia.

Every word."

My hands were shaking.

I pressed them flat against my apron.

"She told him...

that your former wife still loves you.

That if she believed you'd been unfaithful to her during the marriage, she would finally sign something.

Release something."

"What document?"

I swallowed hard.

"I don't know the name of it.

But Vanessa said if your former wife signs before the wedding, everything transfers.

And you won't be able to stop it."

Luca went very still.

Then he picked up his phone again.

"Daniel.

Pull every financial file connected to Elena Moretti.

Tonight."

He hung up and looked at me for a long moment.

"You've been carrying this since four o'clock."

"I didn't know who to tell."

"Why did you tell me now?"

My throat tightened.

"Because she was going to let me lose my job over it.

And I realized..." I stopped.

"What?"

"That she wasn't afraid of me knowing.

She was certain I wouldn't say anything."

Something shifted in Luca's expression.

He turned slowly toward the window.

Upstairs, a door opened and closed.

Vanessa's heels crossed the floor directly above us.

Then his phone lit up.

Daniel.

Luca answered immediately.

"Talk to me."

A long pause.

Then Daniel's voice, low and careful.

"Boss.

The document is already in transit."

What Luca found in those financial files — and what Vanessa had been planning long before the engagement — is more calculated than anyone realized.
