Chapter 2: The Sound Nathan Made Was Not a Denial

Dominic didn't answer Nathan's question.
He turned slowly and looked at the man who had called himself a brother for seventeen years.
"You approved the lock," Dominic said.
"Dom, I had no idea she was—"
"You approved the lock.
You told a four-year-old her mother went to Pennsylvania.
And you don't look surprised enough to be innocent."
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"You're not thinking clearly."
"Daniel." Dominic didn't raise his voice.
"Take him upstairs.
Nobody talks to him.
Nobody lets him near a phone."
Nathan stepped back.
"Dominic.
Listen to me.
Claire told me Mia had found something.
Documents.
She said Mia was going to go to the authorities.
I didn't know she'd—I thought Claire just wanted her gone for a few days."
The cellar went silent.
Mia lifted her head from Harper's hair.
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
"There's a folder.
Behind the third rack.
I hid it the moment I understood what it meant."
Dominic looked at her.
"What kind of documents, Mia?"
Her cracked lips pressed together.
"The kind that explain why your first wife's accident wasn't an accident."
The sound Nathan made wasn't a denial.
It was something much worse.
