Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Mention

I woke up at the resort to birdsong and hot coffee.

No sticky fingers.

No one's grocery list on my phone.

Just me and the quiet I had almost forgotten existed.

Then I turned my phone back on.

Forty-three missed calls.

Nineteen texts from Jason.

Six from Chloe.

Two from numbers I didn't recognize.

I poured my coffee and started reading.

Jason's first messages were angry.

The usual.

"You embarrassed us." "The kids cried all night." "How could you do this to your own family."

I kept scrolling.

Then his tone changed completely.

"Mom.

Call me.

Please.

It's not about the kids anymore."

Then: "Mom I saw the account.

Why didn't you tell me."

Then just: "Mom.

Please."

I set my cup down.

He had seen my bank statements.

Not just the grocery withdrawals.

Not just the snack money.

He had seen the full picture of what two years of Chloe's "emergencies" had actually cost me.

My retirement account.

The numbers I had never shown anyone.

I hadn't planned for him to find that file.

I had left my laptop open on the kitchen table before I left.

The folder was right there on the screen.

Maybe I left it open on purpose.

Maybe I just forgot.

My phone rang.

Jason again.

I let it ring twice.

Then I answered.

The first thing he said wasn't sorry.

It was a name.

A name I had not heard in over three years.

A name that had nothing to do with babysitting or locked doors or spa weekends.

And that name changed everything.

😶
