Chapter 2: Three Car Doors

Part 2 ⬇️

Ethan looked away.

That was her answer.

Grace's eyes dropped to the small cream-colored box still sitting beside his untouched plate.

She had not moved it.

She had not hidden it.

She simply stood there, one hand against her cheek, the other pressed flat against her stomach, and made a decision.

She picked up the box and slipped it into her cardigan pocket.

He didn't deserve to know.

Not tonight.

"Say it, Ethan," she said quietly.

"Whatever it is, just say it."

Lauren tilted her head.

"He doesn't owe you an explanation, Grace."

"You don't know my name well enough to use it."

"Actually—" Lauren smiled— "I know quite a lot about you.

More than you'd be comfortable with."

Something shifted in Ethan's expression.

Not guilt.

Something closer to warning.

"Lauren." His voice was low.

She ignored him.

"Did he ever tell you how we met?

It wasn't at the Southgate project." She paused.

"It was eighteen months ago.

At your anniversary dinner.

The one you thought he canceled because of work."

The room went completely still.

Grace turned to Ethan.

He said nothing.

And then, from outside, three car doors slammed.
