Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Bench

Part 2 ⬇️

Inside the courtroom, Ryan's attorney was already spreading folders across the table.

Ryan looked relaxed.

Comfortable.

Like a man who had already won.

He hadn't seen the bench yet.

The door behind the judge's seat opened.

I watched Ryan's face as the new judge walked in.

He went pale so fast I thought he might be sick.

"Court is in session," my father said, adjusting his robes.

"I'll be presiding over today's emergency property hearing."

Ryan shot to his feet.

"This is a conflict of interest.

He can't — she's his daughter —"

"Sit down," my father said quietly.

"Or I'll add contempt to your morning."

Ryan's attorney grabbed his arm and pulled him back into his chair.

Vanessa, seated in the gallery, was gripping her handbag so hard her knuckles had gone white.

My father looked at me once.

Just once.

Then he turned to Ryan's attorney.

"I've reviewed the asset filings submitted this morning.

I have some questions about the shell vendor transactions listed on pages fourteen through nineteen."

Ryan turned and stared at me across the room.

I didn't look away.

"You planned this," he whispered.

I said nothing.

Because on the table in front of my attorney sat one more document Ryan had never seen.

A forensic audit.

Eighteen months of evidence.

Every transfer.

Every signature.

Every lie.

And it had my father's signature on the approval order.

What Claire had prepared went far deeper than Ryan ever imagined.
