Chapter 2: Three Black Cases

Grant called eleven times before 10:15.
I didn't answer once.
My attorney, David, set the three cases on the conference table and looked at me.
"You're sure?"
"Open them."
The first case held printed copies of the altered safety reports — patient medication records quietly modified over four years.
The second held bank transfer records.
Overseas accounts.
Shell companies.
One of them registered under Paige's married name.
The third case held something else entirely.
A recording.
Grant's father, Richard Whitmore, speaking to a board member fourteen months ago.
*"The Vale girl controls the cold-chain routes.
Grant gets close, she signs the transfer, we absorb the shares before she understands what she's given up.
She won't fight it.
She has no one."*
David slid the third case toward the federal investigator already seated at the far end of the table.
The investigator hadn't said a word since we arrived.
He didn't need to.
His office had been building their own case for eight months.
We were simply the final piece.
My phone buzzed again.
Not Grant this time.
Meredith.
I turned the screen face-down.
Then the conference room door opened.
And the person who walked in was the last one I ever expected to see standing on my side.

What Elena found inside that third case — and who just walked through that door — changes everything.
