Chapter 2: The Photograph That Changed Everything

“—that Daniel wanted her nowhere near this wedding.”

A gasp swept through the ballroom.

Daniel shook his head.

“Mom, I never sent that message.”

His father held up the page.

“It came from your number.

It said you would cancel the wedding if she appeared.”

“That’s impossible.”

Claire stepped forward.

“This is a misunderstanding.

We should discuss it privately.”

“No,” Daniel’s mother said, finding her voice.

“You already made sure I was alone.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“What does she mean?”

His mother’s hands trembled.

“Claire arranged a cottage where I could ‘rest.’ This afternoon, the owner told me I wasn’t permitted to leave until the reception ended.

When he refused to open the gate, I climbed over it and fell into a muddy ditch.”

Claire’s face turned white.

“She’s confused.”

Then Daniel’s father removed several printed screenshots from the envelope.

“She isn’t confused,” he said.

“Someone used Daniel’s phone while he was asleep.

And these messages were forwarded to another number.”

“Whose number?” Daniel demanded.

Before his father could answer, the photographer slowly raised his hand.

“I know,” he said.

“Because I saw Claire holding Daniel’s phone—and I photographed who she sent them to.”
