Chapter 2: The Call She Never Expected Him to Make

The voice on the other end was calm.
Too calm.
"Marcus.
We've been waiting for your call."
Marcus didn't recognize the number.
But the voice knew his name.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then: "Child Protective Services.
We received a report this evening.
Concerning your daughter Nia."
The room went completely still.
Nia looked up at her father.
Caleb sat back down slowly.
Even Ava stopped moving.
Marcus kept his voice steady.
"Someone filed a false report against me."
"Sir, we're required to follow up on every report.
We'll need to schedule a home visit."
Marcus turned and looked directly at Vanessa.
She had taken two steps toward the hallway.
Her eyes were on the door.
"Don't," he said quietly.
She stopped.
"Marcus, I can explain—"
"You called CPS." His voice didn't rise.
It didn't need to.
"You filmed my daughter crying.
You staged it.
And then you called CPS and told them I was @busing her."
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then Caleb spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Dad…
that's not the only call she made."
Marcus looked at his son.
"She called Grandma Ruth too.
She told her you were dangerous.
That Nia wasn't safe with you."
Something shifted in Marcus's expression.
Because Grandma Ruth wasn't just family.
Grandma Ruth had legal guardianship rights.

What Grandma Ruth was already planning — and what Vanessa had secretly promised her — will change everything.
