Chapter 2: Three Words on a Screen

Victoria's mask had slipped — and she knew it.

For a moment, no one moved.

Leo's cries softened to small, shuddering whimpers against Elena's chest.

Marcus stood perfectly still, watching his wife with eyes that held no warmth at all.

Victoria: This isn't what it looks like, Marcus.

I was upset.

I would never actually hurt him.

Marcus: You kicked at a woman holding our infant son.

Victoria: I didn't touch the baby!

I was trying to get to him — she was blocking me!

Marcus: Stop talking.

Victoria flinched.

In ten years of marriage, she had never heard him use that tone.

Elena took a small step toward the nursery door, but Marcus raised one hand without looking at her.

Marcus: Elena.

Stay.

He reached into his jacket pocket and placed his phone face-up on the hallway table.

On the screen was an open message thread.

Victoria's name was at the top.

Victoria's breath caught.

Marcus: You want to explain this to me?

Or should I call Dr.

Harmon first and let him explain it?

Victoria's eyes went wide.

Her hand moved toward the phone — then stopped.

Elena looked down at the screen.

She could only read three words before Marcus turned it face-down.

Three words that made her stomach drop.

*He's not yours.*

What does that message really mean — and who sent it?

May you like

The truth is darker than anyone in that hallway expected.
