Christopher didn't move for a long time.

He just stood there, soaking wet, Emma wrapped in his arms, the phone pressed against his ear.

His face went white.

Then it went still — the kind of still that comes before something breaks.

The recording had caught everything.

Vanessa's voice.

Clear.

Calm.

Saying things no mother should ever say about a child.

"She's the only thing standing between us and everything, Marcus.

Once she's gone, it all transfers to me.

Christopher will be too broken to fight it."

A man's voice answered.

Low.

Familiar.

"And you're sure the pool looks like an accident?"

Christopher lowered the phone slowly.

Vanessa took one step toward him.

"Whatever you heard — it's not what you think.

I love Emma.

You know I love her."

He looked at her the way you look at something you no longer recognize.

"Who is Marcus?"

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Emma tugged her father's sleeve.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Daddy…

she called him before you came home.

I heard her say your name.

And Grandma's name."

Christopher turned back to the phone.

He scrolled to the call history.

The last outgoing call — made twelve minutes before he arrived — was to his own brother.

What Christopher found next shattered everything he thought he knew about his family.
