Chapter 2: The Boy Who Already Knew

Part 2 ⬇️
Daniel caught up with me in the parking lot.
His tie was loose, his jacket half off.
He looked less like a groom and more like a boy who had just realized how badly he'd miscalculated.
"Mom, please.
Just come back inside."
"No."
"People are staring.
Tiffany is—"
"Tiffany sl@pped me, Daniel."
He went quiet.
Not the quiet of someone who had no answer.
The quiet of someone choosing which answer was safest.
"She was upset," he finally said.
I looked at my son for a long moment.
"That's all you have?"
He ran a hand through his hair.
"What do you want me to say?
It's my wedding night."
"I sold your grandfather's land to pay for this wedding night."
The words landed.
I watched his face change — not with guilt, exactly.
With something closer to calculation.
And that was when I understood that the sl@p wasn't the thing that should have shocked me.
It was the fact that Daniel already knew about the land.
He had known for weeks.
And he had never once said a word.
"Who told you?" I asked.
He looked away.
Behind us, the ballroom doors opened.
Elaine stepped out, phone in hand — and she was already dialing.
