Chapter 4: Everything the Marriage Was Built On

The private room was small by Kingsley Grand standards — a round table, six chairs, a sideboard with untouched water glasses.

A single painting on the wall: a landscape, anonymous, chosen to offend no one.

Corinne sat without being invited to.

Priscilla stood behind her like a second spine.

Weston closed the door.

Nadia remained standing.

So did Desmond.

"Start talking," Nadia said.

She was not looking at Corinne.

She was looking at Weston.

"It's more complicated than—"

"Was our marriage arranged?"

The word hung there.

Weston flinched at it.

"That's an ugly way to put it."

"Then put it a prettier way."

He exhaled.

"My family had significant debts.

Ones that weren't public.

The Calloway Group held several of the notes — commercial loans, a refinancing arrangement from 2019 that went badly.

My mother needed a resolution that didn't involve courts or press."

"And someone suggested your son marry Desmond Calloway's daughter," Nadia said.

"It wasn't like that."

"Then tell me what it was like."

Corinne spoke.

"You were not some innocent party in this, Nadia.

You came to our events.

You accepted Weston's attention.

You chose to marry him."

"I chose to marry a man I believed loved me." Nadia's voice did not shake.

"I did not choose to be a financial instrument."

"No one said—"

"Did my husband marry me to settle a debt?"

Silence.

Desmond had not spoken since they entered the room.

He stood near the sideboard with his hands at his sides.

He was watching Weston.

Weston looked at the table.

"The debt was part of the conversation.

Early on.

Before I knew you."

"Before you knew me," Nadia repeated.

"And after you knew me?"

He looked up.

"After I knew you, I wanted to marry you."

"But you never told me."

"No."

"You let me believe it was just — us."

"It became just us.

For me."

Priscilla made a sound that was almost a laugh.

"Weston, don't."

"Don't what?" he said sharply.

"Don't rewrite it now because she's standing there looking at you like that."

"Priscilla." His voice was a warning.

"She's going to find out anyway." Priscilla looked at Nadia.

"Ask him about the account.

The one in the Isle of Man.

Ask him what it was for and whose name is on it and when it was opened."

Weston went very still.

Nadia turned to him slowly.

"What account?"

He said nothing.

"Weston.

What account?"

Desmond reached into the inside pocket of his gray jacket.

He set a folded document on the table.

He did not open it.

He did not explain it.

He simply placed it there, and stepped back.

Weston stared at it.

"How long have you had that?" he said.

"Long enough," Desmond said.

Corinne reached for the document.

Desmond put two fingers on it.

"That's for Nadia."

May you like

Corinne pulled her hand back.

Nadia picked it up.
