Richard's coffee mug hit the floor.
Nobody moved to clean it up.
"Answer me, Nicole." His voice was barely above a whisper, which somehow made it worse.
"Who.
Is.
Daniel.
Carter."
Nicole's lips moved but nothing came out.
Her eyes darted to me, then to Ethan, then back to Richard — like she was calculating which lie still had a chance of working.
There were none left.
I grabbed Ethan's hand and pulled him close.
He didn't fully understand what was happening, but he could feel it.
His small fingers wrapped tightly around mine.
Then Nicole did something none of us expected.
She straightened her spine, lifted her chin, and looked directly at my father.
"You were never home, Richard.
What did you expect?"
The air left the room.
Richard took one slow step toward her.
"How long?"
She said nothing.
"HOW LONG, NICOLE?"
"Fourteen months." 😶
I watched my father's face change in a way I had never seen before and never want to see again.
Not anger.
Something much quieter.
Much more final.
He folded the medical papers carefully, slid them into his jacket pocket, and picked up his car keys from the counter.
"Dad—" I reached for him.
"Not now, Maya." His voice cracked on my name.
He walked to the door.
Then he stopped.
Without turning around, he said: "Tell Daniel Carter he can have her." 💔
The door closed.
And Nicole finally started to cry.
