Chapter 2: The Finger That Broke the Silence

The security guard appeared in the doorway within sixty seconds.
A big man named Roy — someone I'd said good morning to every day for six months.
He looked at me.
He looked at Renata.
Then he looked at Lily, still shaking against my chest.
His jaw tightened.
"Miss Cole," he said carefully, "Mr.
Callahan is on his way up."
Renata smoothed her robe and smiled.
"Perfect."
My heart stopped.
Grant walked in two minutes later, still in his tuxedo shirt, cufflinks undone.
He took in the scene — Renata's composed expression, the curling iron on the floor, me holding his daughter in the corner.
"Emma attacked me," Renata said immediately.
"In front of Lily.
I want her removed and arrested tonight."
Grant looked at me.
His face was unreadable.
"Is that true?" he asked.
"She was burning Lily's scalp," I said.
"On purpose.
Look at her hair, Grant.
Please — just look."
He stepped closer.
He saw the singed patch.
Something moved behind his eyes.
Then Renata said quietly, "She's been unstable for weeks.
I was going to tell you.
I didn't want to worry you before the gala."
Grant went still.
And that's when Lily did something she hadn't done in two years.
She lifted her head from my shoulder, looked directly at her father — and pointed at Renata.
The room went completely silent.

What Grant did next — and what Lily did after that — will break your heart and then put it back together.
