Chapter 2: The Message on the Screen

Officer Reynolds burst into the greenhouse.
“Step away from Marcus and put down the trophy, Mrs.
Vance.”
Mrs.
Vance froze, then quickly placed the case on a table.
“You misunderstand.
Marcus became aggressive when I told him there had been a judging error.”
“That’s not true!” Marcus struggled to his feet, one hand pressed against his aching shoulder.
“She said someone else was supposed to win.”
Mrs.
Vance’s face tightened.
“Marcus, think carefully before you accuse a teacher.”
“I saw everything,” Leo said from the doorway.
His voice trembled, but he did not move.
“And the camera recorded it.”
The color drained from Mrs.
Vance’s face.
Officer Reynolds glanced at the flashing red light.
“Then we’ll review the footage together.”
Suddenly, Mrs.
Vance’s phone buzzed on the table.
A message lit up across the screen where everyone could see it:
DID YOU GET THE TROPHY BACK?
MY SON CANNOT FIND OUT THE SCORES WERE CHANGED.
Marcus stared at the message.
“Whose son?”
Mrs.
Vance snatched for the phone, but Officer Reynolds reached it first.
As he read the sender’s name, his expression changed.
“You need to come with me,” he said.
“Because this message came from someone Marcus trusted.”
Who changed Marcus’s scores—and why was Mrs.
May you like
Vance protecting them?
