Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

The room went completely still.
Mark's nervous laugh faded.
His face had gone pale.
"I don't know what you're talking about," he said, but his voice cracked on the last word.
The man in the suit didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"My name is Daniel Holt." He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a folded document on the nearest table.
"Sarah and I have been married for four years.
She came here tonight to serve you divorce papers, Mark.
That's all."
Lena spun toward Mark.
"Divorce papers?
You told me she was just some woman who wouldn't leave you alone!"
Mark grabbed her arm.
"Lena, listen to me—"
"Don't touch me." She stepped back, her red dress suddenly looking less powerful than it had a minute ago.
"You said you were single.
You swore to me."
A woman at a nearby table stood up slowly.
She was older, well-dressed, and had been watching the whole scene without a word.
"I'm Mark's employer," she said quietly.
"Or I was, until this morning."
She looked at Sarah with something close to an apology in her eyes.
"I think you should know — he didn't just take your money.
He took ours too."

Mark's face went white.
The envelope in Daniel's hand wasn't just divorce papers.
