Chapter 2: She Never Does

I pressed my hand over my mouth so he wouldn't hear me breathe.
His boots were right there.
Inches from my face.
Then I heard Maya's voice — coming from the doorway.
**"You weren't supposed to come today."**
Her voice was small.
Afraid.
The man didn't answer right away.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low and calm — and that made it worse.
**"You know I can't stay away, Maya."**
My whole body went cold.
I wanted to move.
I wanted to scream.
But I forced myself to stay still.
Then I heard something drop onto the bed above me.
Something heavy.
Maya whispered, **"Please.
If my mom ever found out—"**
**"She won't,"** he said.
**"She never does."**
*She never does.*
Those three words hit me like a wall.
He had been here before.
More than once.
And my daughter had been protecting him — or protecting me from knowing.
I heard Maya sit down on the edge of the bed.
I could feel her weight just above me.
Then the man said one more thing — something that made my hands start shaking on that floor.
He said a name.
Not Maya's name.
*Mine.*
