Chapter 8: What the Footage Showed
The case moved faster than Grayson Holt had expected.
The security footage was clear.
Forty-one seconds of high-resolution video from the archway camera that showed, without ambiguity, Eleanor Vance tearing the ultrasound photograph in half, dropping the pieces over the railing, waiting while Sarah leaned forward to watch them fall, and then placing both hands flat against Sarah's shoulders and pushing.
There was no stumble.
No reach.
No accident.
Grayson watched it once in the prosecutor's office and did not ask to watch it again.
He called Eleanor from the hallway outside.
"The footage is not recoverable for us," he said.
"I need you to hear that clearly.
There is no interpretation of what is on that recording that supports your account."
"Then challenge the chain of custody," Eleanor said.
"Challenge how it was obtained.
Arthur had no authority to—"
"Arthur arranged the installation on your instruction," Grayson said.
"His name is on the contract.
The server credentials were in his name.
He had every legal right to provide that footage."
Silence on the line.
"Eleanor.
I need you to let me negotiate."
"No."
"The prosecutor is willing to discuss—"
"I said no." Her voice was sharp and final.
"I am Eleanor Vance.
I am not going to stand in a courtroom and plead to anything.
You will find a way to—"
"There is no way," Grayson said.
"I have been doing this for thirty years.
I am telling you there is no way."
The line went quiet for a long moment.
"Then find me a different attorney," Eleanor said.
Grayson Holt looked at the closed door of the prosecutor's office.
"All right," he said.
"If that's your decision." He paused.
"For what it's worth — and I don't imagine it's worth much to you right now — I am sorry it came to this."
Eleanor hung up.
Three weeks later, faced with the footage, Arthur's seven pages of documented incidents, the testimony of Petra and Rosa, and the eleven intercepted letters entered as evidence of premeditated psychological manipulation, Eleanor Vance accepted a plea agreement.
The charges: aggravated assault and unlawful interception of private correspondence.
The consequences: a suspended custodial sentence, five years of supervised probation, a formal restraining order prohibiting any contact with Sarah or Daniel Vance, and the permanent transfer of her directorial authority over the Vance Family Trust — the financial instrument she had used to control the household, the staff, and her son's life — to Daniel's sole management.
