Chapter 2: The Word That Stopped Everything

The girlfriend's laugh died in her throat.

She looked at the billionaire — the man she had stood beside for two years — and she didn't recognize the expression on his face.

He wasn't looking at her at all.

He crossed the driveway in four steps and stopped directly in front of the elderly woman.

His voice dropped so low that only those standing closest could hear.

"Mom.

Why didn't you call me?"

The word hit the crowd like a stone dropping into still water.

Mom.

The girlfriend's face went white.

"That's not possible," she whispered.

"You told me your mother was g0ne.

You told me she d*ed years ago."

The billionaire turned slowly.

When he looked at her, something in his expression made her step back.

"No," he said quietly.

"That's what you were told."

Evelyn hadn't moved.

She still held the small paper bag in both hands.

Her eyes were calm — the kind of calm that only comes from carrying something heavy for a very long time.

The girlfriend turned to the head of security.

"You let this happen?

You were supposed to—"

"Supposed to what?" the billionaire cut her off.

She stopped.

The paper bag crinkled softly as Evelyn shifted it in her hands.

Nobody asked what was inside it.

But the billionaire's eyes went straight to it — and for just a moment, his jaw tightened like he already knew.

---

What was inside that bag — and what had the girlfriend been hiding about Evelyn for years?
