Chapter 2: The Name He Never Told Me

Part 2 ⬇️

My father turned to me before he said a word to the man in the dark suit.

"I'm sorry you had to see all of this, son."

That was it.

No anger.

No explanation.

Just that.

I told him he had nothing to apologize for.

He squeezed my arm once, then turned back toward the cars.

Inside the ballroom, I could see George Martinez through the glass.

He wasn't shouting anymore.

He was on his phone, pressing it hard against his ear, his face the color of ash.

Beverly had sat back down.

Slowly.

Like her legs had stopped working.

Fiona pushed through the doors and ran toward us in the rain, her dress soaking at the hem.

"Blake, please.

Just come back inside.

We can fix this."

"Fix what?" I asked.

She looked at my father.

Then at the cars.

Something shifted in her expression — not guilt, not love.

Fear.

"How do you know those people?" she whispered.

My father didn't answer her.

The man in the dark suit spoke quietly into his phone, then looked up.

"Sir, the board has been waiting since seven.

Mr.

Calloway flew in from London this morning."

Fiona's hand dropped from my arm.

"The board?" she said.

My father finally looked at her directly.

Calm.

Unhurried.

The same way he used to look at overdue bills — like they were someone else's problem now.

"Goodnight, Fiona."

He walked toward the first car.

And I followed him.
