Chapter 7: The Billion-Dollar Choice

Sienna’s expression hardened.
“You’re accusing me because a serial number differs?”
“I’m accusing you because the copy was in my locked bag,” Mara said.
“Carver controlled the staff keys.”
The older detective turned to Sienna.
“Where is the original ring now?”
“In your evidence bag, apparently.”
“No,” Reid said.
“The ring from the coffee pot has the correct serial number.
This second one was made to frame Mara.”
Sienna pointed at Petra.
“She had access to my jeweler.”
Petra shook her head.
“You ordered two rings.
I heard you tell the jeweler one was for the ceremony and one was ‘insurance.’”
“You misunderstood.”
“I recorded the call.”
Sienna went still.
Petra unlocked her phone and pressed play.
“Make the copy exact,” Sienna’s recorded voice said.
“If anyone notices before Saturday, the housekeeper takes the blame.”
The detective lowered his notebook.
“Ms.
Vale, do not leave.”
Sienna laughed.
“You think a recording from a frightened assistant proves everything?
My family’s attorneys will bury this.”
Dante picked up the authentic ring.
“What happens Saturday?” he asked.
Carver, held beside Reid, spoke before Sienna could stop him.
“The engagement announcement activates the trust amendment.”
Sienna spun toward him.
“Be quiet.”
“You promised me ten million dollars,” Carver said.
“I’m not taking this alone.”
“You incompetent little man.”
Mara stepped between them.
“The hidden camera was meant to capture Dante’s access code.
The ring supplied the second authorization.”
“And once the transfer cleared,” Dante said, “the trust would move into a shell company controlled by Sienna.”
Sienna’s mouth curved.
“Controlled jointly by us.
You signed the preliminary papers.”
“I signed an engagement agreement.
Not a transfer.”
“You never read what was placed in front of you.
Men like you don’t.
You pay people to notice details.”
She looked at Mara.
“And then you ignored the one woman who noticed everything.”
Mara held her gaze.
“You ignored me too.
That was your mistake.”
Sienna reached suddenly for the authentic ring.
Reid blocked her, but she knocked the tablet from his hand and ran toward the private office.
Carver twisted free and followed.
“The server!” Mara shouted.
“They’re going to erase it.”
Dante and Mara reached the office as Carver pulled open the wall panel.
Sienna grabbed the server drive and raised it over the marble floor.
“One step closer and every record disappears,” she said.
Petra appeared in the doorway holding her phone.
“No,” Petra said.
“It doesn’t.”
Sienna froze.
“I copied the invoices, messages, shell-company papers, and recordings,” Petra continued.
“They’re with an attorney and the detectives.”
“You ungrateful coward,” Sienna said.
Petra’s hand shook, but she did not lower the phone.
“You mistook fear for loyalty.”
Carver dropped into Dante’s chair.
“Make a deal with us.
Give us five million, let us leave, and your family name stays out of the news.”
Dante looked at Mara.
“What do you think?”
Carver laughed.
“You’re asking the maid?”
“I’m asking the person who protected this family when everyone with a title failed.”
Mara faced Carver.
“No deal.”
Sienna’s eyes flashed.
“Then your mother’s address becomes public.
Every enemy Dante has will know exactly where she lives.”
Dante stepped forward.
“Threaten Mara or her mother again, and that statement joins every charge already waiting for you.”
“But the transfer is still scheduled,” Reid warned.
“The stolen credentials are active.
We need an independent trust custodian to block them.”
“Who qualifies?” Mara asked.
“Someone without a financial interest, employed in the residence for more than three years, with no family connection to Dante.”
Everyone looked at Mara.
Sienna laughed bitterly.
“Her?
The plain little housekeeper?”
Dante took Mara’s hand.
“This ring is not a decoration,” he said.
“It carries control of everything my family built.
I trusted the wrong people with it.”
He slid the billion-dollar ring onto Mara’s finger.
“I’m trusting the woman who earned it.”
The office speakers chimed.
TRANSFER CANCELED.
NEW CUSTODIAN ACCEPTED.

Sienna stared at Mara’s hand.
Then the detectives stepped into the room behind her.
