Chapter 2: The Name She Said Softly


Cassidy didn't move.
Water dripped from her hair onto the marble floor.
Her dress was soaked.
Brendan's new girlfriend was still laughing.
Then Cassidy's phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Read the message.
And something in her face went very still.
"You should have checked who owned this building before you invited me here," she said quietly.
Brendan stepped forward.
"You don't own anything.
You never did.
You were just—"
"The silent majority shareholder of Harlen Group?" Cassidy finished.
"Since I was twenty-six."
The room went silent.
His mother grabbed the edge of the table.
"That's impossible."
"The accounts are already frozen," Cassidy said.
"All four of them.
Including the one you opened in my daughter's name."
That word — daughter — landed like a stone.
Brendan's face changed.
"How did you know about that account?"
Cassidy didn't answer.
She was looking at someone else in the room.
Someone who had gone very pale.
Someone who worked for her.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
She said one name.
Softly.
Almost gently.
And the person she named took one step backward toward the door.
