Chapter 2: The Woman Who Came Looking

My finger hovered over the screen.

Every instinct told me to hang up.

But that sound — a crash, then voices I didn't recognize — made my stomach drop.

"Larry?

What's happening?"

Silence.

Then Jenna's voice in the background, sharp and panicked.

"Someone call for help — she's not breathing!"

My legs stopped moving.

"Larry, who is that?

Is that your mother?"

He didn't answer.

I heard shuffling, something heavy hitting the floor, and then a stranger's voice — calm, almost too calm — saying, "Step away from her.

Now."

I turned around and ran back down the corridor.

When I pushed open the suite door, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw.

Kathleen was on the floor.

The garment bag was ripped open beside her.

And kneeling next to her was a woman I had never seen before — older, well-dressed, holding Kathleen's wrist with a steady hand.

Larry stood against the wall, his face completely white.

"Who is she?" I whispered.

Jenna grabbed my arm and pulled me close.

"Liz," she said quietly, "that woman came in right after you left.

She said she knows Kathleen.

She said she's been looking for her for twenty years."

I looked at the stranger.

The stranger looked up at me.

And in that moment, I realized she was crying — not from fear.

From rage.
