Chapter 2: The Name That Silenced the Room

The ballroom went completely silent.

Lorenzo didn't raise his voice.

He didn't have to.

He simply stood there, waiting for an answer, and the air in the room changed.

The wealthy woman — Mrs.

Hargrove — lifted her chin.

Even now, she refused to back down.

"Your mother bumped into my guest and ruined a ten-thousand-dollar gown," she said.

"I simply said what needed to be said."

Lorenzo looked at her for a long moment.

Then he looked at me.

"And you," he said quietly.

"You stepped in."

It wasn't a question.

I nodded, my hands still shaking.

He turned back to Mrs.

Hargrove.

"You screamed at my mother in front of three hundred people." His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"Over a dress."

Mrs.

Hargrove opened her mouth — then closed it.

One of her companions touched her arm and whispered something.

She went pale.

That was when I noticed the older man near the far wall.

He had been watching the entire time.

He pulled out his phone, said two words to someone, and slipped it back into his pocket.

Lorenzo hadn't looked away from Mrs.

Hargrove once.

"I'd like you to apologize to her," he said.

"Right now.

In front of everyone."

Mrs.

Hargrove's face tightened.

And then she said something that made the entire room hold its breath.
