Chapter 1: The Veil Beneath the Floor

Three years after Evelyn vanished on our wedding day, a housemaid's vacuum caught against a narrow seam in the old bridal-suite floor.

When Anna pulled at it, a long white wedding veil began slipping out from beneath the floorboards.

I recognized it immediately.

It had belonged to Evelyn.

Then I pulled the veil again.

A hidden floor panel lifted slightly—and a woman's hand reached through the opening and grabbed the fabric from below.

My sister Bianca was standing nearby.

The moment she saw the hand, her composure disappeared.

She insisted Evelyn had run away exactly as we had always believed.

I opened the panel completely.

Evelyn was alive beneath the room, still wearing the ruined remains of the wedding dress she had vanished in.

She was exhausted, terrified, and staring directly at Bianca.

I reached down and took her hand.

Then Evelyn told me the truth.

She had never left the house.

Why had my own sister spent years protecting the story of a runaway bride?

How could a woman survive beneath a room everyone believed was empty?

And what had Evelyn discovered on our wedding day that made keeping her hidden more useful than letting her disappear forever?

For years, I believed she had abandoned me at the altar.

Now the veil beneath my feet was telling me the wedding had never ended.
