Chapter 2: What Her Silence Confirmed

Luca didn't say a word.
He walked straight back into the dining room.
The guests were still at the table.
Vanessa was laughing at something one of them had said.
She looked up when he entered.
"Luca, darling — we're about to cut the cake—"
"Step outside."
Her smile held.
"Can't it wait?"
"No."
She set down her fork slowly and followed him into the hallway.
The moment the door closed, Luca held up the receipt.
Vanessa glanced at it.
"What is that?"
"You tell me."
"I have no idea what you're—"
"You called the clinic tonight.
You moved the appointment up."
A pause.
Then her chin lifted.
"He's an old dog, Luca.
He's in p@in.
I was doing him a kindness."
"You forged my name."
"I made a decision you weren't willing to make."
Luca looked at her for a long moment.
"Where is your phone?"
"Why?"
"Because Daniel says the clinic called you back at 9:52.
While you were sitting at that table telling our guests Bruno would be wearing a bow tie at our wedding."
Vanessa's expression didn't break.
But her hand moved — just slightly — toward her evening bag.
Luca noticed.
"Vanessa.
What else did you arrange tonight?"
She said nothing.
And that silence told him everything.
