Chapter 2: Their Father’s Signature

The older sister stared at the check in the youngest brother’s hands.
“How much is it?”
He folded it before she could grab it.
“That isn’t the point.”
“Then what does the key open?” the older brother demanded.
Grandma set down her cup.
“Something meant for the person who still knew how to say thank you.”
Their faces changed at once.
“We didn’t know there was a key,” the sister said quickly.
“Write us another check, Grandma.
It was only a misunderstanding.”
“No,” Grandma replied.
“You can’t punish us over two envelopes!”
“I’m not punishing you,” she said calmly.
“I gave each of you exactly what you deserved.
You chose what to do with it.”
The older brother hurried toward the fireplace, but the envelopes were already ash.
Then the doorbell rang.
A gray-haired man carrying a leather folder stepped inside.
The youngest brother recognized him as Grandma’s lawyer.
“I came as soon as you called,” he said.
The sister pointed at the check.
“Tell her she has to treat us equally.”
The lawyer opened the folder and placed three documents on the table.
When the older brother saw the signature at the bottom of the first page, all the color left his face.
